Carlos wins The Australian Grand Prix 2024.
Carlos Sainz had to miss the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix due to an emergency appendectomy performed the day prior to the race on March 8.
His ability to participate in the Australian Grand Prix was uncertain at first. The Ferrari driver was hesitant about his physical condition for the fast-paced Albert Park Circuit during practice on Friday. However, he steadily progressed over the weekend and ultimately seized the opportunity to lead the race on Sunday after Max Verstappen retired early.
Verstappen’s rare problem opened the door for Sainz to end Red Bull’s perfect start to the season and seal his third F1 career victory.
The Spanish driver acknowledged that he was not completely at ease and continued to feel unease while driving during the Melbourne weekend, which makes his victory even more remarkable.
Charles Leclerc secured a Ferrari 1-2 finish, with Lando Norris coming in second and McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who is a local favorite, claiming the final spot on the podium in third place.
Sergio Perez, racing for Red Bull, was unable to seize the victory in the absence of his teammate Verstappen, settling for fifth place ahead of the Aston Martin pair of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
