During the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, it was revealed that technical director Matt Harman and head of aerodynamics Dirk de Beer had both chosen to resign from their positions in Alpine F1 team.
A poor car.
Alpine had a disastrous beginning to the fresh season when Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly qualified at the rear of the grid for the season opener on Saturday. Their performance in the race was equally disappointing, with both drivers finishing in a disappointing 17th and 18th place. The blame lies not on the drive but the poor car, which performs abysmally.
New organization structure.
Following this disappointing result, the French team made an announcement on Monday regarding the resignations of Harman and de Beer. In addition to this, they revealed a new organizational structure that mirrors the three-pillared approach employed by McLaren.
Alpine has established three distinct technical positions, appointing Joe Burnell as the technical director for engineering, David Wheater as the technical director for aerodynamics, and Ciaron Pilbeam as the technical director for performance. All three individuals will directly report to team principal Bruno Famin.
The series of events portrayed by Alpine does not reflect positively on the team, as significant structural changes right at the beginning of the season suggest a team in disarray. Alpine must focus on making substantial enhancements to both their car and their human resources. The departure of key figures at the start of the season does not bode well for the fans and sponsors.
Famin in a team statement said “We have decided to make these organizational changes as we can clearly see that we are not where we want nor need to be in terms of performance level and it is time to take another step in terms of organization and people,”
“The new three-pillared structure with three Technical Directors, each specializing in different areas, will bring better work and collaboration across our technical areas and contribute to delivering performance from the factories to the race track.
“I trust fully in the abilities of Joe, David and Ciaron to work closely together in bringing the team the performance and improvements that it needs.
“Finally, I would like to thank Matt and Dirk for their efforts over the last couple of years at the team and wish them the very best in the next chapter of their careers.”
